Excavation & Grading: What Site Prep Actually Involves

Excavator grading a site in Butte County

Nobody takes a photo of finished grading. But it’s the step that decides whether everything built on top of it lasts — or fails. Here’s what excavation and grading actually involve and why we treat it as the most important part of the job.

Why grading comes first

Pavement, foundations, and drainage all depend on the ground being shaped and compacted correctly. Get the grade right and water flows where it should, the base stays stable, and the surface lasts. Get it wrong and no amount of quality asphalt or concrete on top will save it.

What excavation includes

  • Clearing the site of vegetation, debris, and old material.
  • Cutting and filling to bring the ground to the right elevation and slope.
  • Hauling excess dirt off-site or importing fill where needed.
  • Trenching for drainage, utilities, or footings.
  • Rough and fine grading to set the final, precise surface.

Drainage is everything

In our area, the difference between a surface that lasts and one that fails is almost always water. Proper grading pitches the ground so water runs off to where you want it — not toward a building, not pooling in the middle of a lot. We plan drainage before we shape the ground, not after.

Compaction and base

Loose soil settles. We compact the subgrade in lifts with rollers and plate compactors so it won’t sink later, then build a properly graded aggregate base. Skipping or rushing compaction is the number-one reason driveways and lots develop low spots and cracks a few years in.

Common mistakes we fix

A lot of our work is correcting shortcuts from other jobs — pavement laid over un-compacted fill, driveways graded to drain toward the garage, lots with no real base. These are expensive to fix after the fact and cheap to do right the first time.

Get it right the first time

Whether it’s a driveway, a pad, or a full commercial site, the prep is what you’re really paying for. We’ve been grading Butte & Glenn County sites since 1993. Call (530) 896-1727 to talk through your project.
